The Black Turkey of Gascony
8 years ago, the 'Conservatoire des Races d'Aquitaine' managed to salvage 3 or 4 groups of Gascony black
turkeys (also known as the 'Gers blacks') from some old country people who no longer wanted
to keep them. At first, the groups were kept apart in order to note their specific characteristics,
then they were mixed together.
This type of turkey is currently reared in small numbers (in practice
2 big flocks of 40 birds each on 2 conservation farms). To thrive, these animals need a lot
of space and naturally like to wander among woods, fields and meadows.
